Frequently Asked Questions

How to Prepare for DEXA ~ What to Expect ~ Payment

What We Do

Our imaging suite specializes in body composition and bone density scanning, using the GE Lunar iDXA scanner.  We are a small family business, locally owned and operated. Our current offerings include total body scans for body composition, and hip and lumbar spine scans for bone density.  We also include FRAX calculations and TBS (Trabecular Bone Score) in our bone density reports.  TBS assesses the microarchitecture of the lumbar spine and provides an additional metric to more accurately gauge bone health and fracture risk.  Should such a need arise in our community, we have the software capability and expertise to add additional studies, such as forearms.

What to Wear

In regards to what to wear, DEXA is most accurate in loose, light clothing, without metal or hard plastic parts (zippers, grommets, buttons, underwires, and hook and eye closures) and no compression or tight elastic bands.  Metal and hard plastics and reflective decorations (beads, pearls, sequins, etc.) cause artifacts that obscure the tissues and bones beneath them and have to be excluded for calculation purposes.  Compression or tight clothing artificially increases the tissue density which can skew the BMD evaluation.  That being said, we provide gowns and shorts as needed.

What to Expect

Each of our bone density scans take about one minute to run.  At a lower BMI body composition scans take about eight minutes, and at the higher end take about 14 minutes to complete.  In general, including intake, changing, Q&A, positioning and scanning, you should expect to spend about 30 minutes with us for either body composition or bone density study appointments.

How to Prepare

Clients do not need to be fasting for DEXA scans, but I would not recommend getting one directly after a Thanksgiving dinner.

Rule-Outs for DEXA include pregnancy, oral or IV contrast (like barium) within 7 days prior, and calcium supplements or Tums on the day of imaging.

How We Charge

We provide imaging services for a flat fee. We accept payment by debit/credit card, or check. You may schedule directly at your convenience. There’s no need for authorizations, approvals or referrals as we do not bill insurance, or accept Medicare.
